It’s natural for family and friends to have questions—and maybe even concerns—about a loved one’s decision to pursue a career in law enforcement. While policing is a rewarding field driven by purpose, it does come with unique challenges and sacrifices.
At the Tustin Police Department, we are proud of our officers and the dedication they bring to their work. We are also deeply grateful for the families and friends who stand by them throughout this journey. We recognize that this path isn’t just a personal choice; it’s a shared commitment, and we’re honored by the support you provide.
As your loved one embarks on the path toward becoming a police officer, here are six ways you can show your support during their time at the police academy and beyond:
1. Offer Encouragement
Recruits face challenging training and often doubt their abilities. A few encouraging words can go a long way in boosting their confidence. Encouraging open communications and support, even from a distance, can help your recruit stay on track toward his or her goal of becoming a police officer.
2. Take the Time to Know Their “Why”
Sometimes, recruits need someone to talk to about their experiences. But at the same time, it is important to take the time to sit down with your loved one and get to know his or her “why.” Even if the path they have chosen isn’t for you, do your best to listen without judgment, opinion or interruption.
3. Help with Study Materials
During your recruits’ time at the academy, they will face rigorous testing. To successfully pass those tests, the recruit must study. One of the best ways you can support your loved one and capitalize on spending time together is to help him or her study for tests or exams.
Everyone studies at a different pace and in differing ways. Take the time to learn how they study and support their good study habits. Provide or help find study materials, such as flashcards, or offer to quiz them.
Your participation in their studying will help increase your connection and enhance their success as they continue on their law enforcement journey.
4. Physical Fitness Support and Healthy Eating Habits
Staying in peak physical condition is crucial. Although your recruit may have adequate physical fitness exposure at the academy, they may still need additional support. Healthy eating habits keep your recruit lean and healthy and set the stage for a successful career.
Assisting in cooking meals that are balanced and provide high protein will keep their metabolism functioning on all cylinders. Reducing the use of alcohol or high-sugar meals is a healthy way to ensure your recruit is at peak performance.
5. Create a Relaxing Environment
The stress of training can be overwhelming. Your recruit faces daily physical, emotional and psychological challenges during their time at the academy. Help them unwind by creating a relaxing environment at home or suggesting stress-relief activities like yoga, meditation and the simplest form of exercise—walking.
6. Celebrate Milestones
Acknowledging their accomplishments and milestones is important. Whether it’s passing an exam, completing a training module, or attending their graduation, celebrate these achievements to boost their morale.
Supporting a police recruit in the Tustin Police Department requires understanding and encouragement. By offering emotional support, practical help, and celebrating their successes, you can make their challenging journey easier.
The Tustin Police Department has nearly 100 sworn police officers and 55 civilian support personnel. They are responsible for patrolling the city, which covers approximately 11.08 square miles with a population of almost 80,0001.
None of the Tustin PD team could do what they do without support from their colleagues, friends, or family.
